About Gomoku: rules and how it works

Gomoku is a Japanese strategy game traditionally played with Go stones on a Go board. The rule fits in one sentence: players take turns placing a stone on an empty point, and the first to make five in a row horizontally, vertically or diagonally wins. Stones are never moved or captured, so every placement is permanent and every mistake stays on the board.

People often call it tic-tac-toe on a giant board, but that undersells it. On a large board you rarely run out of space, so the game turns into a race of threats: whoever creates two dangerous lines at once usually wins. That depth is why Gomoku is studied seriously, with named openings and rule variants used in tournaments.

Play gomoku online here on a 15 by 15 board with two players on the same device. Black moves first, White replies, and there is no computer opponent. This version uses freestyle rules, so any line of five or more stones wins. It runs in your browser with no download or sign-up, and after your first visit it keeps working without an internet connection.

Gomoku tips and strategy

  • Start near the center. Stones in the middle of the board belong to more potential lines than stones pushed against the edge.
  • Block every open three, meaning three stones in a row with both ends empty. Once it becomes an open four, there is no way to stop it.
  • Look for moves that create two threats at once, such as a four and an open three together. Your opponent can only answer one of them.
  • Keep the initiative. If you force your opponent to block move after move, they never get time to build threats of their own.

About the game

How do I play Gomoku?
Click a cell to place your stone. Form 5 in a row to win.
What is the difference between Gomoku and Tic-Tac-Toe?
Tic-Tac-Toe uses a 3 by 3 grid, needs three in a row and always ends in a draw with perfect play. Gomoku uses a much larger board, 15 by 15 here, and needs five in a row, which leaves room for long attacks and double threats.
Does six in a row count in Gomoku?
In this version, yes. It follows freestyle Gomoku, where any unbroken line of five or more stones of one color ends the game. Some tournament variants accept exactly five only, but that rule is not used here.
Can two players play Gomoku on one device?
Yes. This game is made for two people sharing one phone, tablet or computer: one takes Black, which moves first, and the other takes White. There is no mode against the computer.
