About Pool: rules and how it works

Pool is one of the best-known table games: you strike the white cue ball so that it hits the coloured balls and knocks them into the pockets. In this practice version the table has six pockets, one in each corner and one in the middle of each long rail, with seven coloured balls racked on the right-hand side.

To shoot, press on the table, drag back away from the cue ball and let go. A line joins the cue ball to your finger or cursor, and the ball travels the opposite way. The farther from the cue ball you release, the harder the shot, up to a cap. It works with a mouse and with touch, so it plays well on a computer or a phone.

This is solo practice: there is no opponent, no turns and no fouls. If the cue ball drops into a pocket, it comes back to its starting spot with no penalty. The Restart button racks the balls at any time, and when you clear the table the game tells you how many shots it took and offers to rack again.

Pool tips and strategy

  • Aim using the ghost ball: picture where the cue ball must be at the moment of contact, touching the coloured ball on the side away from the pocket, and aim at that spot rather than at the centre of the ball.
  • On a straight, full hit the cue ball stops dead and passes nearly all its speed to the coloured ball. Use that to leave the cue ball well placed for your next shot.
  • Control your power. Full-strength shots send balls bouncing off every rail and scatter the rack; a medium shot is usually enough and keeps the cue ball under control.
  • Rails bounce the ball back at the same angle it came in, so you can play off a rail to reach balls hidden behind others.
  • Start with the balls closest to the pockets and leave the ones in the middle of the cluster for later, when the table is more open.

About the game

How do I play Pool?
Drag opposite to target to aim, release to strike the cue ball.
Can I play pool against someone else?
There is no two-player mode and no computer opponent; it is solo practice. To compete on the same device, take turns clearing the table, pressing Restart between racks, and whoever needs fewer shots wins.
What happens if I pot the cue ball?
There is no penalty. The cue ball reappears at its starting spot on the left side of the table and you carry on. The shot still counts towards the total shown when you clear the table, so avoid it if you want a better score.
How do I control the strength of a shot?
Strength depends on how far from the cue ball you release. Let go close to it for a soft shot, or farther away for a hard one, up to a maximum. There is no power bar, so use the length of the aiming line as your guide.
What kind of game is Pool?
Pool belongs to the Sports Games collection you can play free online, with a focus on fisica, classico.
