About Breakout: rules and how it works

Breakout is the brick-breaking game Atari released in arcades in 1976: you steer a paddle along the bottom of the screen and bounce a ball up to smash a wall of colored bricks. Its formula inspired plenty of successors, most famously Arkanoid in the 1980s, which added stages and power-ups. That is why many players use the two names almost interchangeably for the whole genre.

This breakout game online sticks to the original style, with no power-ups: 40 bricks in five rows of eight, each worth 10 points, for a maximum of 400. You have 3 lives and lose one every time the ball gets past your paddle. Where the ball lands on the paddle shapes the bounce: near the center it keeps its direction, while the edges push it toward that side. Clear every brick to win.

On a computer, move the paddle with the left and right arrow keys. On a phone or tablet, drag your finger across the play area and the paddle follows. The ball goes into play as soon as the game opens, with no start screen. Everything runs in your browser with no download or sign-up, and the game keeps working offline after your first visit.

Breakout tips and strategy

  • Aim with the ends of the paddle: hitting the ball with the left edge sends it further left, and the right edge sends it further right.
  • Dig a tunnel through one side of the wall. Once the ball gets above the bricks, it bounces between the ceiling and the wall and clears a whole batch without any help from you.
  • After every return, drift the paddle back toward the center so you can reach either side with less travel.
  • Watch out for repeated hits on the same edge: the angle builds up and the ball travels more and more sideways. To straighten it out, hit it with the opposite edge of the paddle.
