About Connect Four: rules and how it works
Connect Four is played on an upright grid of 7 columns and 6 rows. On your turn you pick a column and drop a disc, which falls to the lowest empty slot. The first player to line up four discs of their color horizontally, vertically or diagonally wins. If all 42 slots fill up without a line of four, the game ends in a draw.
The game became a household classic as a plastic-grid board game released in the United States in the 1970s. Its rules are simple, yet it has been solved by computer: with perfect play, the first player can force a win by opening in the center column. Real people never play perfectly, which is why every game still feels open.
This version lets you play connect 4 online in your browser with two players on the same device. Red goes first, Yellow answers, and you take turns tapping columns. There is no computer opponent. Connect Four tips and strategy
- Take the center column whenever you can. It is part of more possible lines of four than any other column.
- Before you drop a disc, think about the slot it opens: the space right above becomes playable for your opponent. Avoid playing directly under a square that would complete their line.
- Build double threats, such as two lines of three that each need a different square. Your opponent can only block one at a time.
- Do not watch only rows and columns. Diagonal lines are the threats players miss most often, both yours and your opponent's.
