About Battle Sea: rules and how it works
Battleship is the classic game of strategy and deduction in which each side hides a fleet on a grid and tries to sink the other's ships by calling shots blind, one coordinate at a time. Long before it became a board game, people played it with pencil and paper on hand-drawn grids. The fun lies in turning every hit into a clue about where the rest of the ship is hiding.
In this battleship game online you take on the computer across two 10 by 10 boards. Each fleet has five ships of 5, 4, 3, 3 and 2 squares, 17 squares in total, placed at random horizontally or vertically. You fire by tapping the enemy grid: hits show up red with an X, misses as a white dot. Score a hit and you fire again; miss and the turn passes to the computer, which plays by the same rule.
The first side to hit all 17 squares of the opposing fleet wins, and the counter at the top shows each side's hits. The computer fires at random until it finds a ship, then starts probing the neighboring squares, so stay sharp. It runs in your browser with no download or sign-up, works on phones and computers, and stays playable offline after your first visit. The ↻ button starts a new game with freshly placed fleets.
Battle Sea tips and strategy
- Fire in a checkerboard pattern, skipping every other square. Since the smallest ship is two squares long, every ship must cover at least one square of that pattern, so you sweep the sea with half the shots.
- After a hit, try the four adjacent squares: up, down, left and right. Once you land a second hit, keep going along that line until you miss, then work back the other way.
- Make the most of the bonus shot: every hit lets you fire again, so keep tracing the ship while you are on a streak instead of jumping to another area.
- The game does not announce when a ship sinks, so count your hits. Five in a row can only be the largest ship; with two or three, the ship may continue or two ships may be sitting side by side.
- Start near the middle of the board: long ships have more possible positions passing through the central squares than through the corners.
