About Minesweeper: rules and how it works
Minesweeper is a logic puzzle best known as the game that shipped with Windows. Mines are hidden under a grid of closed squares, and every square you open shows a number telling you how many mines touch it among its eight neighbours. Using those clues, you work out where the mines are and clear every safe square without setting one off.
This minesweeper online uses a 9 by 9 board with 10 mines, the same layout as the classic beginner level. Click to open a square; if it has no neighbouring mines, the surrounding area opens up automatically. Right-click to place a flag, or on a phone press and hold a square for about half a second. A counter shows how many flags you have placed.
You win by opening all 71 safe squares and lose the moment you hit a mine. There is no timer, so you can think through every move, and the Restart button deals a fresh board. It runs in your browser with no download or signup and keeps working offline after your first visit.
Minesweeper tips and strategy
- Start in a corner. A corner square has only three neighbours, so it is more likely to be a zero and open up a big area right away.
- Look for solved numbers. If a 1 touches only one closed square, that square is a mine. Flag it and use it to clear the squares around it.
- Once a number has all of its mines flagged, every other closed square next to it is safe to open.
- Learn the 1-2-1 pattern along a straight wall of closed squares: the mines sit directly opposite the two 1s, and the square opposite the 2 is safe.
- Only guess when no deduction is possible, and then pick squares away from high numbers, where mines are usually less dense.
