About Dots and Boxes: rules and how it works
Dots and Boxes starts with an empty grid of dots. On your turn you draw a line joining two neighboring dots, horizontally or vertically. Whoever draws the fourth side of a small square claims it, scores a point and moves again. When every box on the grid has been closed, the player who claimed the most boxes wins the game.
It is a pencil-and-paper classic described by the French mathematician Édouard Lucas in the nineteenth century, and it still fills the margins of school notebooks. The simple look hides real strategy: choosing when to hand a few boxes to your opponent often decides the game, and experienced players count the chains of boxes before every move.

- Avoid drawing the third side of a box. That hands the box to your opponent, who also gets another move.
- Early on, play lines that leave no box with three sides. The goal is not to be the first player forced to open a chain of boxes.
- When you have to give boxes away, give up the shortest chain. You lose the least and force your opponent to open the next one.
- Use the double-cross: when you take a long chain, stop before the last two boxes and draw the line that gives both away together. Your opponent gets two boxes but then has to open the next chain for you.
