About Reversi: rules and how it works

Reversi is played on an 8 by 8 board with discs that are black on one side and white on the other. The game starts with four discs in the center. On your turn you place a disc so that one or more of your opponent's discs are trapped in a straight line between the new disc and another of yours. Every trapped disc flips to your color.

The game appeared in England in the late nineteenth century. Othello is the modern version standardized in Japan in the 1970s, with the four starting discs always set in the same crossed pattern. That is exactly the setup used here, so if you know Othello you already know these rules. The saying goes that it takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master.

Play reversi online with two players on the same device. Black moves first, White replies, and there is no computer opponent. Squares where you can legally play are highlighted, and the score shows how many discs each color holds. If you have no legal move, your turn passes automatically. It runs in your browser with no download or sign-up, and works offline after your first visit.

Reversi tips and strategy

  • Corners are the most valuable squares: a disc in a corner can never be flipped and becomes an anchor for taking the edges.
  • Avoid the square diagonally next to an empty corner. Playing there usually gives your opponent a route into that corner.
  • Having few discs early on is fine. What matters more is keeping plenty of moves available while leaving your opponent with few options.
  • Prefer moves that flip discs in the interior and avoid creating new frontier discs, the ones touching empty squares, which hand your opponent more moves.

What is the difference between Reversi and Othello?
The playing rules are essentially the same. In original Reversi the first four discs could be placed in different ways, while Othello fixes a crossed setup in the center and has Black move first. This version uses that standard setup.
What happens if I have no legal move in Reversi?
You pass, and the game handles it for you: a message says there are no moves and the turn goes to your opponent. When neither player can move, the game ends and whoever has more discs wins.
Can I play Reversi with two players?
Yes. Two people share one phone, tablet or computer, one playing Black and the other White, tapping the highlighted squares. There is no mode against the computer.
What kind of game is Reversi?
