About Tic-Tac-Toe: rules and how it works

Tic-Tac-Toe, known as noughts and crosses in Britain, is played on a 3 by 3 grid. One player is X, the other is O, and you take turns marking an empty square. The first to line up three of their symbols horizontally, vertically or diagonally wins. If all nine squares fill up and nobody completes a line, the game is a draw, which happens a lot between careful players.

This is tic tac toe for 2 players on the same device. There is no computer opponent, so grab a friend and share the screen of your phone, tablet or computer. X always moves first, and the message above the grid shows whose turn it is and announces the win or the draw. Want a rematch? Just hit the restart button and the board clears instantly.

It runs right in your browser with no download and no sign-up. After your first visit the game is stored on your device and keeps working without an internet connection, which makes it handy on a trip, in a waiting room or whenever the signal drops. Rounds only take a few seconds, so it is easy to play several in a row and settle things with a best of five.

Tic-Tac-Toe tips and strategy

  • If you are X, open in the center or a corner. Those squares belong to the most lines and give you the best chances to set up a fork later.
  • Before every move, check whether your opponent has two marks in a line with the third square open. Blocking that threat comes before any plan of your own.
  • Aim for a fork: a single move that creates two winning threats at once. Your opponent can only block one of them.
  • If your opponent opens in a corner, answer in the center. Replying on an edge square lets them build a fork and force a win.
