About Hangman: rules and how it works
Hangman is a classic pencil-and-paper word game. A secret word is shown as a row of blanks, and you uncover it by guessing one letter at a time. A correct letter appears in every spot where it occurs; a wrong one costs you a chance. On paper, each miss adds a piece to the stick figure on the gallows; here, a lives counter keeps track instead.
You get 6 lives per word. Words are drawn at random from a list of 32 everyday English nouns, such as penguin, rainbow and treasure, between six and nine letters long. Click the on-screen letters or type on your physical keyboard; letters you have already tried are greyed out, so you never waste a guess on a repeat.
If you run out of lives, the game shows you the hidden word. The New word button deals a fresh puzzle at any moment, in the middle of a round or after it ends, and since there is no score to lose and no timer, you can take each guess at your own pace and play as many rounds as you like.
Hangman tips and strategy
- Open with vowels. E, A, O and I show up in almost every word on the list and quickly reveal the shape of the answer.
- After the vowels, go for the most common English consonants: T, N, S, R and L. Rare letters like Q, X, Z and J are rarely worth a life.
- Look out for double letters. Words such as balloon, giraffe and butterfly hide a pair, so one correct guess can fill two blanks at once.
- Think about common endings like -ER, -ET and -IN, as in computer, blanket and penguin. Once the last letters show up, the rest of the word often follows.
- You can only miss 6 times. When your lives run low, picture whole words that fit the pattern and choose the letter that most of them share.
