About Checkers: rules and how it works

Checkers, called draughts in Britain, is one of the oldest and most widely played board games. Each player starts with 12 pieces on the dark squares of an 8 by 8 board. Pieces move diagonally one square at a time and capture by jumping over an opposing piece into the empty square beyond it. A piece that reaches the far row is crowned a king.

This version follows standard English checkers rules: regular pieces only move and capture forward, while kings move one square in any diagonal direction. Captures are mandatory, and if the capturing piece can jump again, it must continue the chain in the same turn. You win by capturing every opposing piece or by leaving your opponent with no legal move.

Play checkers online with two players on the same device. Red moves first, heading up the board, and White replies. There is no computer opponent. Tap a piece to select it and its possible destinations light up, then tap where you want to go. It runs in your browser with no download or sign-up, and after your first visit it works without an internet connection.

Checkers tips and strategy

  • Keep your back row pieces at home as long as you can. They stop your opponent from reaching your side and crowning a king.
  • Control the center of the board. Central pieces have more options and can support attacks on either side.
  • Turn forced captures into traps: offer a piece on purpose to pull an opposing piece onto a square where you can jump two in return.
  • Advance in groups so pieces protect each other. A lone piece in the middle of the board is usually an easy target.
  • When you are ahead in material, trade piece for piece. The fewer pieces left, the more your advantage counts.
